Katie Stavert-Bernard of Kensington Area Skating Club claimed PEI’s lone medal, a bronze, at the World’s Finest Chocolate Atlantic Canada Skating Championships in East Hants Nova Scotia over the weekend. Over 200 competitors from the Atlantic Provinces qualified in their Section with up to six skaters in each category advancing to the championships. Skate Canada PEI had skaters competing in nine categories and returned home with one bronze and a number of top 10 and personal best performances.
Stavert-Bernard earned a score of 16.65 in the STAR 5 Under 13 girls, executing two clean axles and a slightly under-rotated double loop. Where she really excelled was in the program components, outscoring all others with a beautifully choreographed performance to the Anastasia soundtrack. Taking gold in the event was Isabel Jeon of Quispamsis, NB with a score of 17.12. Silver went to Veronique Saulnier, also of New Brunswick with 16.73
Other top ten finishes for PEI skaters included Kiera Marshall of Charlottetown Skating Club who finished 6th and Maria Arsenault of Evangeline Skating Club finishing 8th both in STAR 5 girls 13 and Over. In Pre-Juvenile Women under 13, Keira Dougay of Summerside Skating Club placed 8 with clubmate Emma Hynes finishing 9th in the Juvenile Women Under 14 event.
